When Gwyllin the Bard performs “The Woman of Balnain” at Castle Leoch, Claire is affected by the music, though she can’t understand the words. When Jamie translates the words and she learns the song is about a woman who slipped through the stones on a faery hill, you can almost feel the hairs stand up on the back of Claire’s neck.
You can hear this haunting melody for yourself when our special guest Gillebrìde MacMillan performs for us at Outlandish Gathering 2015!
A native Gaelic speaker, originally from the Milton in South Uist, Gillebrìde grew up in a family that always embraced Gaelic songs and traditions. He was a gold medalist at Scotland’s National Mòd, the premier Gaelic festival for Gaelic linguistic and cultural heritage, which holds competition for music and song, among other disciplines. Based on his reputation, Gillebrìde was sought out by the Outlander production to play Gwyllin the Bard in the TV adaptation of Outlander.
Gillebrìde is featured on the Outlander Soundtrack, performing “The Woman of Balnain” which was composed for the series by Bear McCreary. He will bring his current CD, ‘Air Fòrladh / On Leave’ as well as his debut album, ‘Thogainn Ort Fonn!’ to sell and will be happy to sign them for those who purchase a copy.
The celebrated Medieval Gaelic singer and poet is much in demand at Scottish festivals and gatherings. He will be making appearance at the Fergus Scottish Festival in Toronto the weekend following Outlandish Gathering 2015. We are very fortunate to have him join us in Quebec City. Please wish a sincere ceud mìle fàilte to the bard of Castel Leoch! “Like” Gillebrìde’s page on Facebook and be sure to follow him on twitter!
Gillebrìde MacMillan will perform with Àdhamh Ó Broin and Elias Alexander at La Grande Soirée de Bienvenue. Tickets and additional information available here.
